ESPERANCE — A 37-year-old Schoharie County man has been charged with forcing his wife into a “Dutch Oven.”

Charles T. Freiman woke up with an upset stomach early Sunday and needed to use the bathroom. Instead, the civil engineer passed gas beneath the bedding he shares with his petite wife, Candice, 35, who had been in a deep sleep, State Police said.

The 101-pound woman told investigators she awoke to find her tubby husband of 12 years effectively trapping her in blankets he had wrapped over her head.

The horrified woman quickly fell prey to a noxious gas her husband would later blame on the cuisine at the Golden Coral restaurant on Central Avenue in Colonie.

As Candice Freiman struggled to free herself from what the Urban Dictionary defines as a classic “Dutch Oven,” her husband used his girth to pin her beneath the blankets. She was forced to withstand several waves of flatus until she finally lost consciousness, police said.

Mrs. Freiman, who woke up several hours later, called police who arrested her husband.

Charles Freiman pleaded not guilty to charges that include third-degree terrorism and criminal use of a sphincter — both low-level felonies — as well as endangering the welfare of a nostril, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

He was released on $250,000 bail following an arraignment before Judge Barth Stones.
