ALBANY — A construction worker from Averill Park is under 72-hour surveillance at Capital District Psychiatric Center after accidentally ingesting more than half a Reuben sandwich containing no meat, dairy or animal products.

Mick Casper, 41 — who’s been working on the Madison Avenue sinkhole for the past three weeks — stopped by Bologna Loaf’s deli Monday on his lunch break for a sandwich. According to counter staff and other witnesses, he ordered a Reuben sandwich and had nearly finished it by the time he realized the filling was not corned beef.

“We’re used to people getting mad at us and calling us ‘socialists’ because they didn’t realize we do ‘Meatless Mondays’ here, but this guy really went bananas, saying he was going to sue us for emotional damage and false advertising,” said Tender Rondo, owner and founder of Bologna Loaf’s.

“Eventually he started getting hostile, which we are required to take seriously ever since the Tbilisi sausage incident.”

Vegan and vegetarian-friendly businesses have been on edge since a May 30 attack in Tbilisi, Georgia during which a band of ultra right-wing hooligans stormed a vegan cafe and threw sausages and other meat products at customers during a foreign film screening.

Casper was asked to leave Bologna Loaf’s after reportedly threatening to “have President Trump send you all to a North Korean labor camp.” He was rushed to Albany Medical Center after passersby discovered him in an agitated state on Lark Street, and was then transferred to CDPC shortly thereafter.

“We heard him from blocks away. He was screaming about being poisoned and hitting himself. It was really scary,” said Harvey Willow, who works onsite with Casper.

Pro-meat activists have rallied in support of Casper, who is on four different cholesterol medications, and, prior to Monday, had never eaten a meatless meal.

Meanwhile, the New York State Flesh Guild is filing a class action lawsuit against Bologna Loaf’s and is offering free counseling to anyone who has been tricked into eating tofu, seitan, or soy milk.
